Glamping Hen Parties In Scotland: What Are Roulottes?

They are beautiful wooden caravans!
Your hosts, Avril and Alan commissioned six beautiful traditional hand-crafted caravans (otherwise known as roulottes) to be made in France and one from Holland.
Truly unique, each roulotte is hand carved and beautifully decorated with luxurious fabrics and bright, vivid colours.
Perfect for a bride looking for a completely unique experience in the beautiful Scottish countryside.

Location

Located on a small private estate, Roulotte Retreat is found nestled just below the legendary Eildon Hills in the Scottish Borders.
Getting To The Site: Roulotte Retreat is near Melrose and you will receive detailed directions when you book. Travel by car, bus and now local train nearby. Nearest airports are Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle.
What’s Nearby: The site is found just 3 miles away from picturesque Melrose which is the home of Rugby Sevens and the Borders Book Festival. In Melrose there are many restaurants, cafes, shops, etc. If you fancy a stroll through the countyside, St. Cuthbert’s Way long distance footpath is nearby to Roulotte Retreat. Excellent walking by the River Tweed and up the Eildon Hills and a myriad of Border towns and villages to explore.

About The Roulottes

There are seven roulottes to choose from as well as a cottage with bowtop. Please view the images on our website or fb page, a picture speaks 1,000 words!
Numbers: Each roulotte sleeps 2 people apart from Rosa Bella Roulotte which sleeps 2 – 4 people. The cottage sleeps 4 people and has a Bowtop (authentic Gypsy caravan) in the woodland garden, called Ruby, sleeping an additional 2 people. In total, the site can accommodate 22 people.
Price: All the roulottes cost from £105 per night – apart from the larger roulotte (named The Rosa Bella Roulotte) which costs from £110 per night for a couple or £130 per night for 3 – 4 people, depending on which dates you stay.
Minimum Stay: 2 nights (This applies to the roulottes and the cottage)
The Roulottes Include: All bedlinen, towels and crockery are provided. All the roulottes have a wood burner in the salon (eco fuel is provided), a kitchen area complete with Baby Belling oven (perfect if you want to eat in or dine al fresco on your deck and enjoy the view of the meadow). They also includes an original style roulotte bed which is incredibly comfortable with cupboards below and excellent state of the art stainless steel shower room, toilet and hand basin.

About Horseshoe Cottage and Ruby

Sleep: Horseshoe Cottage and Ruby sleep between 4 and 6 people.
Horseshoe Cottage: Inside the cottage, there is a bright sitting room with a beautiful view of the Eildon Hills. The accommodation comprises a galley kitchen, bathroom with shower, double and twin bedroom. The cottage has oil fired central heating as well as a wood burning stove. Inside the cottage, there is also a fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, small TV and DVD, CD player and radio. There are also games and books. There is parking for two cars.
Ruby: Ruby can sleep an extra 2 people in the cottages’ woodland garden in Ruby – an authentic 1930’s Caravan! Guests staying in Ruby share the facilities of the cottage.

More Useful Information

The Studio: The Studio can be hired by groups who are staying at Roulotte Retreat for get togethers, workshops and dinners, etc. The team at Roulotte Retreat can organise outside caterers who can cook up a storm for guests or they can cook and dine together themselves. Guests enjoy sitting around the wood burner at the heart of the 1950’s wooden studio or al fresco on the outdoor covered deck, surrounded by Scots Pine trees.
Hot Tub: Two of the roulottes (named Gitana and Zenaya) also have their very own wooden Japanese style Eco Hot Tubs which are available for an additional fee. They cost £85.00 for two night stays, £100.00 for three nights. Fired up ready for your arrival, you will also be supplied with extra eco fuel and dressing gowns. Roulotte Retreat reserve the right to cancel if there are adverse weather conditions. Please note there is a strict no fake tan policy in the eco hot tub.
Not Suitable: The roulottes are not suitable for children or dogs. However children and up to two well behaved dogs are welcome in Horseshoe Cottage.

Yoga & Wellbeing: Your host Avril teaches Yoga, Pranayama and Relaxation. Get in touch for prices and more information. You can book massage and beauty treatments with nearby Therapist – what a great way to truly relax whilst being in such natural surroundings. Just get in touch to find out more. And don’t forget about the Eco Hot Tubs – the perfect way to unwind.
Hen Party Activities: If you are the outdoors type, why not try horse riding, cycling, walking, clay pigeon shooting, tomahawk throwing or fishing in the famous River Tweed. If arts and crafts are more your thing, there is lots going on in the Scottish Borders from basket weaving, pottery, sketching, furniture making, etc.
What’s Nearby: There are lots of lovely local walks and cycling paths to enjoy. You can also visit local castles, abbeys, stately homes, or even venture out to wild swim in the nearby sea on the East Coast. Edinburgh is just 55 mins away by train if you’d like a city hit during your stay.

Local Shops: The nearest shop is the Co-op at Newtown St. Boswells – two miles away and local shops at St Boswells. There are two 24 hour supermarkets in Galashiels (just 20 minutes drive). Melrose has many specialist shops for fine foods and wines.
Local Food & Drink: There are lots of restaurants, bistros and cafes nearby in local towns and villages.
